In 2006, 498 divorces occurred in Iceland and 577 couples reported dissolution of a consensual union to the National registry.

A total of 1,100 children experienced divorce or dissolution of consensual union of their parents. Currently, it is most common that parents share the custody of their children. Common custody was chosen in 72.5% of all divorce cases and in 84.9% of all cases of  dissolution of consensual union. Common custody was introduced by law in 1994 and since then the number of parents that chose this arrangement has increased notably.
