In 2006, 844 individuals were granted Icelandic citizenship. The number of applications for Icelandic citizenship has increased significantly with a rising number of immigrants. In the early 1990s less than 200 individuals were granted Icelandic citizenship per year as compared to 300 individuals towards the end of the century. The most noticeable increase occurred between 2003 and 2004 (from 463 to 671). 

Most individuals gaining Icelandic citizenship are from Poland. The second largest group comes from states within the borders of former Yugoslavia (89), in particular from Serbia and Montenegro (79 in total).
