NEWS RELEASE ELECTIONS 24 FEBRUARY 2015

General elections to the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, were held on 27 April 2013 under Act No. 24 from May 2000. There are now six constituencies of which two are in Reykjavík. The total number of voters on the electoral roll was 237,807 or 73.6% of the total population. Participation of voters in the general elections was 193,828 or 81.5% of the total number of voters on the electoral roll.

Participation of female voters was similar to that of male voters or 81.9% women compared with 81.1% men. A total of fifteen political organisations offered candidate lists in the elections of which eleven offered lists in all the constituencies. Of the 1,512 candidates, there were 879 men (58.1%) compared with 633 women (41.9%). In the 1st to 3rd place on the lists the proportion of women was 41.2%. The proportion of elected female members was 39.7% but was 42.9% in the general elections in 2009.

A total of 63 members were elected to Althingi in the general elections on 27 April 2013, 38 men and 25 women. Other results of the general elections were as follows: Bright Future received 8.2% of the valid votes and 6 elected members, the Progressive Party 24.4% of votes and 19 elected members, the Independence Party 26.7% of votes and 19 elected members, the Social Democratic Alliance 12.9% and nine elected members, the Left-Green Movement 10.9% and seven elected members, The Pirate Party received 5.1% of valid votes and three elected members. Other political organizations did not receive the minimum of 5% of votes to have a member elected. Together they received 11.8% of valid votes.
