NEWS RELEASE FISHERIES 15 JUNE 2017

The total catch of Icelandic vessels in May was just over 135 thousand tonnes an increase of 27% compared with May 2016. The biggest increase was in blue whiting where the catch was 79 thousand tonnes compared with 58 thousand tonnes in May 2016. Demersal catch increased 20% compared with the previous year, around 51 thousand tonnes were caught compared with 43 thousand tonnes in May 2016. Cod catch was nearly 28 thousand tonnes, an increase of 23% compared with May 2016.

In the 12 month period from June 2016 to May 2017 the total catch was about 1.1 million tonnes, a decrease of 1% compared with the same period from 2015 to 2016.

The value index was 12% higher than in May 2016
