In the theatrical season 2006/2007 the number of spectators to performances of theatres and professional and amateur theatre groups totalled 440,000, as estimated. This equals each individual attending the theatre 1.4 times in a year. The theatres and theatre groups staged together 247 works, performed about 2,800 times.

The estimated total number of spectators to performances of theatres and theatre groups in the theatrical seasons 2000/2001–2006/2007 is shown in the figure. Included are spectators to performances in schools by theatres and theatre groups, as well as co-productions and guest performances, domestic and foreign ones. Spectators to performances of pupils are, however, excluded. Over the period under review, the number of total spectators increased nearly 48,000, which equals to growth of 12 per cent. The total number of spectators to theatrical performances amounted to nearly 30 per cent of the total admissions to cinemas in the year 2006.

 

Professional theatres
In the last theatrical season, seven professional theatres operated on 13 stages with a seating capacity of nearly 3,000. Together the theatres staged 95 works within the country, whereas 63 were plays. Performances numbered 1,224 in total. Spectators to professional theatres, including co-productions with professional theatre groups and guest performances, numbered 259,038.

Professional theatre groups
There were 38 professional theatre groups operating in the country in the last theatrical season. Together they staged 79 works within the country. Performances numbered 1,357. Total number of guests was 212,470, including spectators to co-productions with theatres.

Amateur theatre groups
In the last theatrical season 40 amateur theatre groups staged 89 works. Amateur groups performed 498 times to nearly 30,000 spectators.

Statistics Iceland collects annually information from the theatres and the theatre groups.
