Never before have more students graduated from the tertiary level
There were 3,521 graduates with 3,553 graduations at the tertiary level of education in 2006-2007. Never before have more students graduated at the tertiary level of education in Iceland in one school year since Statistics Iceland started its data collection in 1995. The number of graduates increased by 159, or by 4.7% from the previous year. Females were two-thirds (67.6%) of graduates while males were one-third (32.4%) of all graduates.
Never before have more students graduated with a master’s degree in Iceland in one school year. Graduates with a master’s degree were 612, an increase of 201 from the previous year, or 48.9%. More than two times as many students completed the master’s degree this year than in 2004-2005, when there were 292 graduates with this degree.
A total of 10 Ph.D. students graduated, 4 males and 6 females. This is a decrease of 5 Ph.D. graduates from the previous year.
Graduations with a first university degree are most numerous, or 2,505, an increase of 64 from the previous year (2.6%). That is a smaller increase than in recent years. This school year the increase in the number of graduates at the tertiary level is mostly due to the increase in the number of graduates with a master’s degree.
More graduates than ever before from the upper secondary level
A total of 5,060 students graduated from the upper secondary level of education with 5,621 graduations during the school year 2006-2007. This is an increase of 242 graduates from the previous year, or by 5.0%. Never before have more students graduated from the upper secondary level in Iceland in one school year . Females were more numerous than males or 54.4% of graduates.
More than 3,000 graduations from vocational programmes at the upper secondary level, never more
Never before have there been more graduations from vocational programmes in one school year, or 3,038. Graduates with the journeyman’s examination were 664, an increase of 55 from the previous year (9.0%). It is necessary to go back to the school year 1998-1999 to find so many graduates with the journeyman’s examination in one year. Four out of every five completing the journeyman’s examination are males (80.4%).
The number of students completing the matriculation exam increased by 109 from the previous year
There were 2,561 graduates from 31 schools with a matriculation exam during the 2006-2007 school year, 109 more than in the previous year (4.4% increase). The number of males decreased by 12, while the number of females increased by 121 from the previous year. The proportion of female students completing this exam is large compared with male students. In 2006-2007 1,571 female students completed this exam, 77.4% of the 20 year old age group and 990 males; 43.7% of the 20 year old age group.
