Statistics Iceland has collected and published data on registered students in upper secondary schools and universities in autumn 2005. The data are published in the Statistical series Hagtíðindi.

A total of 42,200 students are registered
In the autumn term 2005 there were 42,200 students registered in schools at the upper secondary and tertiary level of education, more than ever before. There were 25,093 registered students at the upper secondary level and 17,107 at the tertiary level. The number of registered students at the tertiary level has almost doubled while the number of students at the upper secondary level has increased by 24.6% since 1998. Women outnumber men; they are 24,158 (57.2%) while there are 18,042 men registered (42.8%). The increase in the number of students in distance learning programmes has slowed down to a 2.6% increase. The increase is only observed at the upper secondary level but the number of students in distance learning programmes at the tertiary level decreased by 6.3% since the previous year. The number of students who favour distance learning is now twice the number of students in evening courses. In autumn 2005 almost 82% of students are registered in day courses, over 12% in distance learning and 6% study in evening courses.

In the Statistical series Hagtíðindi there are key data on the total number of registered students at both upper secondary and tertiary level from 1998 to 2005. This publication depicts detailed information about the number of students in each school by line of study, sex and mode of teaching. Data on progress of study are also published.

The total number of students at all levels will surpass 100 thousand this year
During the school year 2005-2006 the total number of students in Iceland at all school levels will surpass 100 thousand for the first time. In autumn 2004 there were 99,963 students in Iceland from the pre-primary to the tertiary level. In addition there were 2,175 students studying abroad. Since the number of registered students at the upper secondary and tertiary levels increases by more than one thousand since the autumn 2004 it seems certain that the total number of students in Iceland will surpass 100 thousand this year, even though a slight decrease in the number of pupils in compulsory schools is foreseen.
