Statistics Iceland has published an issue in the Statistical Series on students and qualifications at the age of 24.
In Iceland there are 4,352 individuals born in 1982. The educational history and graduations of this cohort is examined in the Statistics Iceland student register and the register of graduations until the year 2006. In 2006 this cohort is 24 years old. The results show that in 2006 62.1% of the age cohort had graduated from some programme of study in Iceland. Most had completed matriculation examination, which grants admission to university. Graduations from general programmes were approximately 60% of all graduations at the upper secondary level. A total of 58.3% of the age cohort have upper secondary level educational attainment, which means that they can progress to the next level of education. More females than males graduate. A total of 65.8% of females had upper secondary level attainment and 51.4% of males. More residents in the capital city area graduated than residents in other parts of the country. In Reykjavík 62.4% of residents in 1997 had completed the upper secondary level in 2006, but 48.3% of residents in the Southwest and in the Westfjords. A total of 1,427 students from this cohort had studied in Iceland after completing compulsory education but had not graduated in 2006. Thereof almost one-quarter is still attending school; 334 students. Out of the 1982 cohort 224 individuals have not studied in Iceland after completing compulsory education, or 5.1% of the age group.
