NEWS RELEASE ELECTIONS 20 DECEMBER 2016

General elections to the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, were held on 29 October 2016 under Act No. 24 from May 2000. There are now six constituencies of which two are in Reykjavík. The total number of voters on the electoral roll was 246,542 or 74.1% of the total population. Participation of voters in the general elections was 195,203 or 79.2% of the total number of voters on the electoral roll. Participation of female voters was slightly higher than that of male voters or 79.5% women compared with 78.8% men. The participation varied by age, it was lower among young voters than the older ones as in the local government elections 2014 and the presidential elections in 2016.

A total of twelve political organisations offered candidate lists in the elections of which nine offered lists in all constituencies. Of the 1,302 candidates, there were 707 men (54.3%) compared with 595 women (45.7%). In the 1st to 3rd place on the lists the proportion of women was the same (45.7%). The proportion of elected female members was 47.6%, the highest so far but was 39.7% in the general elections in 2013.

A total of 63 members were elected to Althingi in the general elections on 29 October 2016, 33 men and 30 women. Other results of the general elections were as follows: Bright Future (A) received 7.2% of the valid votes and four elected members, the Progressive Party (B) 11.5% of votes and eight elected members, Reform (C), a new party 10.5% and seven members, the Independence Party (D) 29.0% of votes and 21 elected members, The Pirate Party (P) received 14.5% of valid votes and 10 elected members. The Social Democratic Alliance (S) 5.7% and three elected members, the Left-Green Movement (V) 15.9% of valid votes and 10 elected members. Other political organizations did not receive the minimum of 5% of votes to have a member elected. In all, they received 5.7% of valid votes.
