In 2014 there were 26.801 active enterprises with approximately 111 thousand employees. These enterprises had a combined turnover of more than ISK 3.300 billion. Of active enterprises 23.718 had less than 5 employees and 25.180 less than 10 employees. 32.150 persons are employed by companies with less than 10 employees and the turnover of these companies was ISK 708 billion in 2014. By comparison only 143 companies had more than 100 employees, employing a little less than 42 thousand persons with a combined turnover of ISK 1.527 billion.

Statistics Iceland now publishes structural business statistics for the first time. The statistics are based on a standardized methodology and is comparable to structural business statistics in other European countries. It is based on yearly enterprise tax returns and covers the business sector with the addition of fisheries and aquaculture. This publication covers the years 2012 to 2014 but there is ongoing work on publishing time-series from year 2008.

The data is broken down by NACE classification and number of employees. Data on the following variables is included: Number of enterprises, number of persons employed, number of employees, turnover, production value, value added at factor cost, gross operating surplus, total purchases of goods and services, purchases of goods and services for resale in the same condition as received, change in stock of goods and services, personnel costs, wages and salaries, social security costs and payments for long-term rental and operational leasing of goods.
