Domestic Material Consumption DMC) in Iceland was 6.468 kilotonnes in 2025 compared with 6.361 kilotonns in the previous year. These values correspond to 16.6 tonnes per capita.
Material consumption is one of the key indicators used by the United Nations to assess environmental pressures and the use of natural resources by states and is part of the SDG-12.2 sustainability indicator. Minerals for construction of buildings and road construction account for the largest part of the material consumption. By definition, material consumption is domestic material extraction plus imports minus exports. However, it should be kept in mind that the form of goods may be different in domestic material extraction (e.g. fish from the sea) than in export and import.
