NEWS RELEASE FISHERIES 27 SEPTEMBER 2013

Statistics Iceland has released a new issue of Statistical Series  in the topical category of fisheries. This issue presents catch, value and processing of catch 2012.

The total catch of Icelandic fishing vessels in 2012 was 1,449 thousand tonnes which is 300 thousand tonnes more than in 2011. The value of the catch amounted to 159 billion ISK and increased by 3.5% from previous year, 3.4% decrease at constant prices. The largest part of the catch was processed in the eastern part of the country, mainly pelagic fish. The highest regional share of the demersal catch was processed in the capital area, mainly in Reykjavík. The main processing method for cod was freezing in land-based factories, and for Atlantic mackerel frozen at sea or freezing in land-based factories. Total value of by-products amounted to 4.5 billion in 2012. Value of by-products is not included in the total value of catch.
