NEWS RELEASE FISHERIES 16 MAY 2017

The total catch of Icelandic vessels in April was just over 109 thousand tonnes which is an increase of 5% compared with April 2016. The biggest increase was in blue whiting where the catch was 67 thousand tonnes compared with 56 thousand tonnes in April 2016. On the other hand, demersal catch decreased compared with the previous year, around 40 thousand tonnes were caught compared with 43 thousand tonnes in April 2016. Cod catch was 18 thousand tonnes, a decrease of 10% compared with April 2016.

In the 12 month period from May 2016 to April 2017 the total catch has decreased by 59 thousand tonnes, or 5% compared with the same period from 2015 to 2016.

The value index was 10.7% lower than in April 2016
