A total of 1,663 fishing vessels were registered at the Icelandic Transport Authority at the end of 2015, which is 22 ships fewer than one year earlier. The number of decked vessels was 758 and their combined size was 92,067 gross tonnages (GT). The number of decked vessels had reduced by 15 between years while the total size increased by 6,414 GT. The number of trawlers was 46 at the end of 2015 and their total size amounted to 53,320 GT. The number of trawlers decreased by three from previous year and their combined size decreased by 4,124 GT. The number of registered undecked vessels was 859 at the end of 2015 and a total of 4,244 GT. Undecked vessels decreased by four boats between years, while the total size the undecked fleet increased by 5 GT.

Just about 24.1% of the vessels were registered in the Westfjords of Iceland, a total of 401 ships of which 233 were undecked vessels. Eight trawlers were registered in the Icelandic Capital region and nine in Northeast Iceland.

The average age of the Icelandic fishing fleet was 24,9 years at the end of 2015. The average age of decked vessels was just over 24 years, trawlers 30 years and undecked vessels nearly 28 years.
