The total catch of Icelandic vessels in March was just over 201 thousand tonnes which is 53% more than the total catch in March 2016. The increase is mostly due to more pelagic catch where 132 thousand tonnes of capelin were caught compared with 79 thousand tonnes in march 2016. Total catch of demersal species was nearly 57 thousand tonnes which is an increase of 14% compared with march 2016. Cod catch was just over 34 thousand tonnes, an increase of 21% compared to the same month a year earlier.
In the 12 month period from April 2016 to March 2017 the total catch has decreased by 35 thousand tonnes, or 3% compared with the same period from 2015 to 2016.
The value index is 29.4% higher than in March 2016
