NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 04 OCTOBER 2016

In 2015, 47 individuals were adopted in Iceland. This is somewhat more than in 2014, when there were 37 adoptions. Step-adoptions were 28 and primary adoptions 19.

Primary adoptions
In seventeen cases, children in primary adoptions came from abroad. Primary adoptions from abroad have been between 10 and 18 in the last five years. In recent years most children have come from China, and the same is true for 2015 when eight children came from there.

Step-adoptions
Step-adoptions were 28 in 2015, which is an increase from the year 2014, when they were unusually low or 19. In most cases adoptive parents were step-fathers, which has always been more common. Primary adoptions within the country were only two in 2015. Only once since 1990 has the number of primary adoptions been lower in a single year, i.e. in 2012 when there was no primary adoption in Iceland.
