NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 11 MAY 2015

The population of Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter 2015 was 329,740. The number of males was 165,650 and females 164,090. The population increased by 700 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the capital region were 211,830 and 117,920 outside the capital region.

A total of 990 children were born in the 1st quarter and 600 persons died. Net migration was 290 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was -370, and 660 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.

Norway was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 220 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 800 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 530 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 430 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (100).

Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 300 out of 430, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 340 out of 1,090. Lithuania came second with 70 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 24,730 by the end of the 1st quarter 2015.
