In the year 2003 a total of 1,473 couples got married in Iceland. In addition to that there were twelve registered partnerships, six female couples and five male couples. The total number of divorces was 531. 

The marriage rate is rather low in Iceland as in the other Nordic countries. Marriage rate calculated as the number of marriages per thousand population was 5.1 in 2003 compared to 5.7 the previous year. The divorce rate per thousand population was 1.8 in 2003.
