NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 09 MAY 2016

The population of Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter 2016 was 334,300. The number of males was 168,360 and females 165,930. The population increased by 1,540 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the capital region were 214,740 and 119,560 outside the capital region.

A total of 980 children were born in the 1st quarter and 590 persons died. Net migration was 1,000 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was negative by 110 persons and positive 1,110 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.

Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 190 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 710 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 460 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 540 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (130).

Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 440 out of 600, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 610 out of 1,650. Lithuania came second with 100 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 27,660 by the end of the 1st quarter 2016 or 8.3%.
