The population of Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter 2017 was 340,110. The number of males was 172,180 and females 167,930. The population increased by 1,660 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the capital region were 218,090 and 122,020 lived outside the capital region.
A total of 940 children were born in the 1st quarter and 600 persons died. Net migration was positive by 1,300 persons. More males than females emigrated. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was positive by 130. Net migration among foreign citizens was positive by 1,170.
Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 160 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 560 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 330 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 620 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (180).
Immigrants with Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 490 out of 680, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 570 out of 1,790. Lithuania came second with 160 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 31,470 by the end of the 1st quarter 2017.
