NEWS RELEASE INHABITANTS 04 MAY 2021

The population of Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter 2021 was 369,870, 189,580 males and 180,300 females. The population increased by 1,290 from the previous quarter or by 0.3%. Inhabitants of the Capital region were 237,470 and 132,400 lived in others regions.

Positive net migration of foreign citizens
A total of 1,140 children were born in the 1st quarter and 580 persons died. Net migration was 530 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 180, and 350 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.

The largest group of foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland
Norway was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 60 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 280 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 120 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 980 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (360).

Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 260 out of 460, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 290 out of 1,330. Lithuania came second with 120 immigrants.
