The population of Iceland was 390,830 at the end of the first quarter of 2023, 201,580 males, 189,110 females and non-binary/other were 150. The population increased by 3,030 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the Capital region were 249,240 and 141,600 lived in others regions.

A total of 1,030 children were born in the first quarter and 670 persons died. Net migration was 2,700 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was -90, and 2,790 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.

Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 150 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 480 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 280 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 1,010 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (320).

Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 280 out of 390, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 1,050 out of 3,800. Ukraina came second with 450 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 67,840, or 17.4% of the total population in Iceland by the end of the first quarter of 2023.

The National Register of Persons is used to calculate the population.
