The population of Iceland at the end of the 2nd quarter 2017 was 343,960. The number of males was 174,810 and females 169,150. The population increased by 3,850 from the previous quarter. Inhabitants of the capital region were 219,900.
A total of 1,000 children were born in the 2nd quarter and 550 persons died. Net migration was 3,400 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was positive by 270, and 3,130 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 130 persons emigrating in the 2nd quarter. Of the 430 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 270 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 590 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (150).
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 480 out of 710, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 1,670 out of 3,720. Lithuania came second with 490 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 34,460 by the end of the 2nd quarter 2017.
