The population of Iceland was 366,700 at the end of the 2nd quarter of 2020, 188,330 males and 178,370 females. The population increased by 560 from the previous quarter or by 0.2%. Inhabitants of the capital region were 234,910 and 131,790 lived outside the capital region.
Negative net migration of foreign citizens for the first time since 2012
A total of 1,090 children were born in the 2nd quarter and 550 persons died. Net migration was 25 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 280. Among foreign citizens, net migration was negative by 260. More males than females emigrated.
The largest group of foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland
Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 80 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 290 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 170 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 1,350 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (430).
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark (170), Norway (60) or Sweden (110), 350 out of 570, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 270 out of 1,100. Lithuania came second with 80 immigrants. Foreign citizens were 50,670 (13.8%) by the end of the 2nd quarter 2020.
