The population of Iceland at the end of the 1st quarter 2013 was 322,930, 161,960 males and 160,970 females. The population increased by 1,040 from the previous quarter. Foreign citizens were 21,910 by the end of the 1st quarter 2013. Inhabitants of the capital region were 206,650.
A total of 1,040 children were born in the 1st quarter and 550 persons died. Net migration was 520 persons. Net migration of persons with Icelandic citizenship was 35, and 480 for foreign citizens. More males than females emigrated.
Norway was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens with 220 persons emigrating in the quarter. Of the 580 Icelandic citizens who emigrated, 400 went to Denmark, Norway or Sweden. The largest group of the 400 foreign citizens who emigrated went to Poland (80).
Immigrants of Icelandic citizenship came mostly from Denmark, Norway or Sweden, 440 out of 610, while Poland was the country of origin for most of the foreign immigrants, 300 out of 890. The United States came second with 50 immigrants.
