The first World Statistics Day is celebrated today. The United Nations encourage the statistical community to raise awareness of the many achievements of official statistics. Statistics Iceland published the Statistical Yearbook of Iceland today, for the twentieth time. The publication has undergone some changes, e.g. explanatory texts have been added in the beginning of each chapter and more emphasis is on graphs and figures.

The statistical yearbook of Iceland is a key publication of Icelandic official statistics and is intended to give an overview of statistical information of the Icelandic economy and society. The Yearbook serves as statistical reference work in a number of economic and social fields. The statistical yearbook offers a wealth of information on social and economic indicators in Iceland:

- The average expected lifetime for women is 83.3 years but 79.7 years for men
- 91% of Icelanders use the internet daily
- The average length of paternity leave in 2009 was 94 days and maternity leave 177
- Unemployment among men was 8.6% in 2009 and 5.7% among women
- The highest inflation rate recorded in Iceland was 84.3% in 1983

Statistics Iceland hopes that the day will draw furthter attention to statistics.
