NEWS RELEASE NATIONAL ACCOUNTS 08 OCTOBER 2026

Net financial assets of domestic sectors amounted to 2,467 billion ISK at the end of 2025, according to preliminary results of the financial accounts. This represents an increase of 136 billion ISK from the previous year, when net financial assets stood at 2,331 billion ISK at the end of 2024.

Total financial assets of domestic sectors amounted to 46,875 billion ISK at the end of 2025, equivalent to 949% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). At the same time, liabilities stood at 44,408 billion ISK, corresponding to 899% of GDP.

The position of households continued to strengthen during the year, with net financial assets increasing from 9,241 billion ISK at the end of 2024 to 10,119 billion ISK at the end of 2025. Total financial assets of households amounted to 13,674 billion ISK and their liabilities to 3,556 billion ISK, equivalent to 72% of GDP.

Non-financial corporations remained in a net debtor position of 5,678 billion ISK. The sector's financial assets stood at 8,930 billion ISK, compared with liabilities of 14,608 billion ISK, corresponding to 296% of GDP. Financial corporations were close to balance, with financial assets amounting to 21,575 billion ISK and liabilities of 21,797 billion ISK.

The net financial position of general government was negative by 1,890 billion ISK. Financial assets amounted to 2,533 billion ISK at year-end, while liabilities stood at 4,423 billion ISK.

Regarding the rest of the world, financial assets of foreign entities vis-à-vis domestic counterparties amounted to 4,916 billion ISK at the end of 2025, while liabilities amounted to 7,349 billion ISK. This reflects the positive net financial asset position of domestic sectors vis-à-vis the rest of the world.

About the data
Financial accounts present the financial assets and liabilities of the economy as a whole and its individual sectors. The accounts form part of the national accounts and are compiled in accordance with the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010), in compliance with current regulations of the compilation of national accounts within the European Economic Area.

A revision of older financial account time series is currently underway, and previously published figures have therefore undergone some changes in this release. Figures for 2025 are preliminary and may be revised in future releases.
