The producer price index (PPI) in January 2009 was 169.7 points (4. quarter 2005 = 100), 7.3% lower than in the previous month. The PPI for fish products was 220.0 points which is 5.4% lower than in December 2008 (effect on the index -1.7%) and the PPI for power intensive industry products was 172.2 points, 17.0% lower (-5.0%). The PPI for food products was 0.2% higher than in December (0.0%) and the PPI for other manufactured products decreased by 2.5% (-0.6%).
The PPI for domestically sold products was 0.1% higher than in the previous month
(0.0%) while the index for exported products decreased 11.0% (-7.3%).
From January 2008 the PPI has increased by 39.2%. The PPI for fish products has increased by 62.7% and the PPI for power intensive industry products has risen by 31.1%. In the same period the PPI for food products rose by 24.3%.

In evaluating the price changes accounted for here, it may be taken into consideration that the trade-weighted average price of foreign exchange in January 2009 was 1.1% lower than in the preceding month whereas it was 71.0% higher than in January 2008.
The Statistical Series issue about the producer price index, which was scheduled on 11 March 2009, has been cancelled.
