NEWS RELEASE PRICES 25 JANUARY 2007

The results of the PPP exercise conducted by Eurostat covering the year 2004 and the preliminary results for the year 2005 have been released in a new issue of the Statistical Series.

The Icelandic per capita volume index at level of Gross Domestic Product is among the highest in the exercise, 29% over the EU-25 average. At the prevailing exchange rate of the Icelandic currency in 2005 the relative price level was the highest in Europe, 44% over the average for the GDP as whole and 69% over for food and non-alcoholic beverages. The results differ widely, the lowest per capita volume is in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, only 26% of the EU-25 average. The highest per capita income is in Luxembourg, 151% higher than the average.

The exercise is conducted in 33 countries, covering the 25 EU Member States, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Croatia and Macedonia, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
