NEWS RELEASE PRICES 06 FEBRUARY 2008

The results of the PPP exercise conducted by Eurostat covering the year 2005 and the preliminary results for the year 2006 have been released in a new issue of the Statistical Series.

The Icelandic per capita volume index at level of Gross Domestic Product is among the highest in the exercise, 30% over the EU-27 average in 2006. The relative price level in Iceland was also the highest in Europe, 42% over the average for the GDP as whole and 64% over for food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The results differ widely, the lowest per capita volume is in Albania, only 21% of the EU-27 average. The  highest per capita income is in Luxembourg, 180% higher than the average.

The exercise is conducted in 37 countries, covering the 27 EU Member States, the EU candidates Turkey, Croatia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the EFTA countries Iceland, Norway and Switzer¬land and the Western Balkan countries Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia.
