In January 2017, overnight stays in hotels were 281,400, which is an increase of 43% compared with January 2016. Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 89% of the total number of overnight stays in January, and increased by 47% compared with January 2016. At the same time, the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 17%.
In the capital region, the number of overnight stays was 206,500, which is a 30% increase compared with January 2016. Around 73% of all overnight stays were in the capital region, followed by overnight stays in the South region, which were 34,500. Overseas residents with the most overnight stays in Iceland in January were from the UK (87,000), USA (64,700), and China (16,600), while overnight stays of Icelanders in January were 29,600.
For the last twelve months, from February 2016 to January 2017, overnight stays in hotels were 3,907,600, which is an increase of approximately 34% compared with the previous year.
61.8% occupancy rate for bedrooms in January 2017
Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels was 61.8% in January 2017, which is an increase of 12.1 points when compared with January 2016, when it was 49.7%. The occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the capital region, or 82.1%.
