NEWS RELEASE TOURISM 04 FEBRUARY 2015

In December 2014, overnight stays in hotels were 133,300 which is a 14% increase compared with December 2013. During the last twelve months overnight stays have increased by 13%.

Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 84% of the total number of overnight stays in December and increased by 14% compared with December 2013. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders increased by 12%.

In the Capital region, the number of overnight stays was 108,800, which is a 17% increase compared with December 2013. Overnight stays in the South region were 11,200 in December 2014. Overseas residents with most overnight stays in Iceland in November were residents from UK (47,700) USA residents (22,400), and Germans (5,900).

Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in December 2014 was 49%
In December the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the Capital region, 70% and in the Southwest, around 42%.Occupancy rate for hotels increases in most areas for the year 2014.

The data above only show overnight stays in hotels that are operating for the whole year. Guesthouses and summer hotels are not included in this category.
