In December 2015, overnight stays in hotels were 181,900 which is an increase of 36% compared with December 2014.

Nights spent by foreign tourists accounted for 89% of the total number of overnight stays in December and increased by 44% compared with December 2014. At the same time the overnight stays of Icelanders decreased by 3%.

In the Capital region, the number of overnight stays was 146,600, which is a 35% increase compared with December 2014. Overnight stays in the South region were 19,300 in December 2015. Overseas residents with most overnight stays in Iceland in December were residents from the UK (61,100), the USA (36,200), and Germany (12,100).

For the year 2015 overnight stays in hotels were 2,815,900 which is an increase of around 22% compared with the previous year.

Occupancy rate for bedrooms in hotels in December 2015 was 47%
In December the occupancy rate for bedrooms was highest in the Capital region, around 66%.

The data above only show overnight stays in hotels that are operating for the whole year. Guesthouses and summer hotels are not included in this category.
