Overnight stays at hotels in Iceland in June were nearly 534,000 or approximately 9.4% more than in 2024 when they were nearly 488,000, according to preliminary data from Statistics Iceland. Overnight stays increased in all regions and proportionally most in the West and Westfjords (30.5%) and East (21.5%). Significant growth also occurred in the Southwest where overnight stays grew by 11.3%. In the South there was 9.9% growth, 6.3% in the North and 5.8% in the Capital region. Overall, overnight stays increased by nearly 14 thousand in the Capital region and roughly 32 thousand in other regions combined.
Foreign overnight stays in hotels were roughly 488,000, or 91% of total overnight hotel stays, which was a 12.4% increase from the previous year. Domestic stays decreased by 14.6% from a year ago to total approximately 46,000. Most of all overnight stays belonged to citizens of the United States of America and in June those increased by 8.4% compared with the same month in 2024. Overnight stays by other nationalities also increased considerably, primarily Germany (24.4%), the United Kingdom (19.4%) and China (70.7%). In the first six months of the year foreign overnight stays in hotels increased by a total of 5.4%. Domestic stays, however, declined by 3.2% during the same months.
Overall supply of hotel bedrooms increased minimally in the country in June. The greatest increase was in the West and Westfjords (2.5%) and Southwest (1.0%). However, supply of bedrooms decreased by 2.1% in the East and to a lesser extent in the South (-0.9%). Smaller changes occurred in the capital region (0.3%) and the North (-0.5%). In total, there were 177 hotels operating in June 2025 with a total of 12,100 rooms which was unchanged from a year ago. Of those there were 60 hotels operating in the Capital region with a total of 5.621 rooms and 47 in the South with 2.761 rooms.
Occupancy rates of hotel rooms increased in all regions and by a total of 7.0 percentage points for the whole country. Rates increased most in the West and Westfjords, or by 17.8 percentage points, and the East (16.2 percentage points). In other regions there was also significant growth or 8.9 percentage points in the Southwest, 8.4 percentage points in the South and 7.4 percentage points in the North. Occupancy rates increased by less in the Capital region, or 3.4 percentage points. The highest occupancy rates were in the South (84.7%) and the Capital region (81.6%).
All accommodations
When all accommodations are considered the total number of registered overnight stays in June were roughly 1,192,000. This was 8.4% higher than in June of 2024 when overnight stays were roughly 1,100,000. Most of overnight stays were registered in hotels and guesthouses or roughly 708,000 (533,600 in hotels and 174,600 in guesthouses). The rest, or approximately 484,000, was attributable to other types of accommodation (camping sites, cottages, etc.). In the first six months of the year accumulated overnight stays totalled 3,984,000 which was 4.8% more than during the same period in 2024.
Revision of data categorisation by nationality
Data on overnight stays by nationality is currently undergoing revisions. While this analysis is in process limited amount on data by nationality will be published. As of this publication only data on hotel overnight stays includes categorisation by nationality. It should also be noted that all data is preliminary and can change in the coming monthly publications. Also, data registered from accommodations can include number of overnight stays that are not attributable to any nationality. In such cases, the data is distributed proportionally on to already recorded nationalities.
Furthermore, data on overnight stays by nationality is used as input in estimating the number of unlisted overnight stays. For that reason, it is also not possible to publish results on the number of unlisted overnight stays for the month of June 2025.
