Overnight stays at hotels in Iceland in June were approximately 532,000 or 0.4% fewer than in 2025 when they were nearly 535,000, according to preliminary data from Statistics Iceland.
Overnight stays increased most in the South region or by nearly 15 thousand (10.9%). In the North there was also 5.8% growth and nearly no change in the East (0.1%). In other regions the number of overnight stays decreased and by most in the Southwest or 7.9%. In the West and Westfjords region the number contracted by 1.6%. In terms of absolute numbers, the greatest decline was in the Capital region where overnight stays fell by roughly 16 thousand or 6.5%. In the first six months of the year the total number of overnight stays at hotels was nearly unchanged from a year ago as there was only a 0.4% increase year over year.
Foreign overnight stays in hotels were approximately 483,000, or 91% of total overnight hotel stays, which was a 0.5% decrease from the previous year. Domestic stays increased by 1.1% from a year ago to total roughly 49,000. Most of all overnight stays belonged to citizens of the USA (172 thousand) and in June those decreased by 8.5% compared with the same month in 2025. Also, the number of overnight stays of visitors from Germany (48 thousand) and the UK (27 thousand) fell by 16.5% and 3.6%, respectively. However, overnight stays of Chinese tourists (34 thousand) increased by 31.0%.
Overall supply of hotel bedrooms increased by 3.3% in the country in June. The greatest increase was in the South (13.3%). In the North there was a 3.4% increase while in the Capital region the supply of rooms grew by 0.9%. In other regions the number declined: Southwest (-5.4%), West and Westfjords (-1.3%) and East (-0.9%). In total, there were 182 hotels operating in June 2026 with a total of 12,670 rooms which was a moderate increase from a year ago when there were 178 hotels operating in the country. A total of 59 hotels operated in the Capital region in June with a total of 5,671 rooms and 54 in the South with 3,188 rooms.
Occupancy rates of hotel rooms decreased by a total of 1.6 percentage points for the whole country. Rates decreased in all regions except in the East and North where the occupancy rate increased by 3.2 and 1.3 percentage points, respectively. In the Capital region occupancy rates fell by 3.4 percentage points. Additionally, in the South they decreased by 1.7 percentage points, 0.7 percentage points in the Southwest and 0.1 percentage points in the West and Westfjords region. In June the highest occupancy rates were in the South (82.2%) and East (80.4%) regions.
All accommodations
When all accommodations are considered the total number of registered overnight stays in June were roughly 1,102,000. This was 1.0% higher than in June of 2025 when overnight stays were nearly 1,091,000. Most of overnight stays were registered in hotels and guesthouses or nearly 695,000 (roughly 532,000 in hotels and roughly 162,000 in guesthouses). The rest, or roughly 407,000, was attributable to other types of accommodation (camping sites, cottages, etc.).

Data registered from accommodations can include number of overnight stays that are not attributable to any nationality. In such cases, the data is distributed proportionally onto already recorded nationalities.
