Revenue from non-Icelandic tourists during the third quarter of 2021 was 107 billion ISK compared with the same period last year when it was 32.8 billion ISK. Revenue from key tourism sectors has decreased by 21% in the last 12 months when compared with the same period the year before, from 193.1 billion ISK to 153.2 billion ISK.
Estimated overnight stays in hotels in November were 251,800 compared with 23,656 in November 2020. The number of overnight stays by Icelanders was 53,200 (+226%) and the number of overnight stays by foreign guests was 198,600 (+2605%).
Register based employment in the tourism industries in Iceland was 21,109 in September 2021, an increase of 34% compared with September 2020. In the 12-month period from October 2020 to September 2021, an average of 15,425 people worked in the tourism industry compared with just over 20,276 in the previous 12-month period.
In November, there were 109,189 departures of passengers from Keflavik airport compared with 5,536 in November 2020. Departures of passengers with foreign citizenship were 75,460 compared with 3,256 in November 2020.
This release includes updated statistics on overnight stays, revenue from non-Icelandic tourists and register based employment. Also updated are statistics on rental cars from the Icelandic Transport Authority, traffic statistics from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, passengers count by nationality from the Icelandic Tourist Board and passengers’ statistics through Keflavik Airport along with traffic statistics published by ISAVIA.
