Turnover according to VAT reports in Icelandic tourism sectors was just under 100 billion ISK in January to February this year, an increase of almost 64% from the previous year.

Overnight stays in hotels in March 2023 were 423,423 compared with 325,975 in March the year before. The number of overnight stays by Icelanders were 77,442 (+11%) and the number of overnight stays by foreign guests were 345,981 (+35%).

Employment in the tourism industries in Iceland was 29,159 in March 2023, an increase of 18% compared with March 2022. In the 12-month period from April 2022 to March 2023, an average of 29,909 individuals worked in the tourism industry compared with 22,993 in the previous 12-month period

In April, there were 198,333 departures of passengers from Keflavik airport compared with 160,103 in April 2022. Departures of passengers with foreign citizenship were 142,180 compared with 102,228 a year earlier.

This release includes updated statistics on overnight stays, turnover by VAT reports and register based employment. Also updated are statistics on rental cars from the Icelandic Transport Authority, traffic statistics from the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, passengers count by nationality from the Icelandic Tourist Board and passengers’ statistics through Keflavik Airport along with traffic statistics published by ISAVIA.

Statistics Iceland no longer provides initial estimates of overnight stays for the latest month.
