Managers received the highest regular salaries in the private sector in 2012. Monthly regular salaries for full-time managers were 821 thousand ISK on average and the median was 717 thousand ISK. Monthly regular salaries for male managers were 872 thousand ISK and 684 thousand ISK for female managers.
General workers received the lowest regular salaries in the private sector in 2012. Monthly regular salaries for full-time general workers were 296 thousand ISK. About 60% of general workers received regular salaries under 300 thousand ISK. The median was 275 thousand ISK. Monthly regular salaries for male general workers were 305 thousand ISK and 266 thousand ISK for female general workers.

Managers also received the highest total salaries in the private sector in 2012. Manager‘s monthly total salaries were 904 thousand ISK on average. Mean total salaries for male managers were 964 thousand ISK and 745 thousand ISK for female managers. Paid weekly hours for male managers were 40.0 and 39.7 for female managers. About 20% of male managers received total salaries higher than 1,200 thousand ISK and about 10% of female managers.
Service workers received the lowest total salaries in 2012. Service workers’ mean monthly total salaries were 367 thousand ISK. Male service workers received monthly total salaries of 394 thousand ISK on average and female service workers 333 thousand ISK. Paid weekly hours were 41.6, 41.9 for men and 41.3 for women. Half of the women received total salaries between 250 and 350 thousand ISK and 35% of men.
When comparing total salaries, paid weekly hours have to be taken into account. Paid weekly hours were fewer for women than men in all occupational groups. General workers had the highest number of paid hours, 46.5, 47 for male general workers and 46.4 for female general workers.
These results are based on the Icelandic survey on wages, earnings and labour costs for the economic activities of Manufacturing (C), Electricity, gas, steam, and air conditioning supply (D), Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (E), Construction (F), Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles (G), Transport and storage (H), Information and communication (J) and Financial and insurance activities (K) according to NACE rev. 2. Results are calculated for occupational groups and sex and apply to the private sector.
